CHANDIGARH: For the British cops who have been investigating the Hannah Foster case, it remains a mystery who financially supported Maninder Pal Singh Kolhi during his 15-month stay in India.
Sleuths of Operation Springfield, launched by the UK police to trace Kohli, veered round the opinion that his relatives in Mohali and elsewhere were supporting him, whereas the Punjab police believed that Kohli was perhaps being funded by James Dennis, son-in-law of the owner of Hazleworld Food, where Kohli was employed for a year.
As during his stay in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, Kohli had adopted the pseudonym Mike Dennis, akin to James Dennis, the police do not rule out he being in constant touch with Dennis. On fleeing from UK on March 18, Kohli came to his brother in Mohali where he reportedly stayed till March 28, when his father-in-law Didar Singh called up from Southampton to inform him that the UK police were hunting for him.
He left Mohali, moved to Bangalore, then Mysore and Varanasi after which he proceeded to Darjeeling. He lived lavishly, police report says Kohli had been a "persistent borrower, gambler and a heavy drinker." But who could give him financial assistance still remains a mystery for the police. Meanwhile, a special court in Kolkata is expected to be set up to hear the extradition proceedings of Maninder Pal Singh Kohli.
